Entries are now open for writers to submit their pieces for consideration in The Best Australian Science Writing 2022 and the UNSW Press Bragg Prize for Science Writing 2022.
Rarely has the world of science and research had a more captive global audience. In 2021, the second year of the pandemic has been marked by monumental shifts that have shaped and disrupted our lives.
Countless science writers and journalists have been on the frontlines documenting the progression of the pandemic, giving readers a sure footing amid the disorientating and dizzying details of research. It is a skill that should never be taken for granted by either the public or the policy makers.
The Best Australian Science Writing 2022 anthology will recognise and celebrate that ability – science reporting and storytelling in all its forms – filled with clarity, integrity, and humanity.
The best science writing makes us pause and pay attention to parts of the world otherwise hidden. It makes us see the world with fresh eyes – filling us with delight and wonder, or with urgency for action, or to ponder over ethical quandaries.
The collection will cover another remarkable year, not only filled with seismic moments in science but also shining a light on important work that has been overshadowed.
I am looking for all types of writing – features, personal essays, news stories, blog posts, book extracts, opinion pieces or poems.
I want to hear from writers of all backgrounds speaking up to tell science stories in all their fascinating complexities. This includes scientists, writers, poets, journalists, and science communicators. I especially want to uncover exciting new voices.
Pieces must have been published in print or online in Australia or globally between 1 January 2021 and 31 March 2022. Authors must be Australian residents or Australian citizens living overseas. The closing date for entries is 31 March 2022.
Entries published between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022 are also eligible for the UNSW Press Bragg Prize for Science Writing. A first prize of $7000 and two runner-up prizes of $1500 each will be awarded.
